Having Children

No this is not an announcement about us having a bun in the oven. Rather just a place to vent a little of my frustration.
As newlyweds we are constantly getting bombarded with questions of when we're going to start having kids. Some people have nice encouraging comments about having children but most are rather negative.
I am constantly getting told that we need to wait till we finish college, travel, are financially stable, own a house, have had fun or we'll regret having children so soon.
I'm sorry but when did having children young become such a negative idea. I see children as a blessing from God and if He chooses to bless me with one soon, I won't be crying with regret but rather with overwhelming joy. Yes I do realize that they may have the best intentions when warning me against reproducing in my twenties, but I also think pregnancy and having kids shouldn't be looked at as a burden or a killjoy on having fun when your young. Personally I think having kids will be one of the greatest and most rewarding adventures of my life, and I will treat it as such. I know there will be rough days, I'm not ignorant, my youngest brother was born when I was seventeen. I know all about dirty diapers, sleepless nights, and tantrums in the store but I also know about the sweet kisses, toothless grins, and wild imaginations.
Have any of you had to deal with negative comments about having children? How do you respond to them?

  1. I know EXACTLY what you mean! What is it about people that they try to decide our lives for us? So irritating... I got married on March 9th as well, and already there are rumours flying around.

James and I are dealing with it by just laughing it off whenever we can and remembering that we're the only ones who know for sure either way. :)

Children are a blessing for sure whether you're 13 or 52, or if it's your first or your 15th.

Thanks for posting this and venting my own frustration as well. :)

  2. I totally agree that children are a blessing--and I don't understand the idea, especially of people who do have children, who say, "Oh, wait, enjoy your life now because you won't enjoy it later." That seems so sad, especially if their children ever hear them! I feel so blessed that my parents have always made me and my siblings feel completely wanted and that we were a joy in their lives and not a curse!

  3. I've heard the same things...I agree with you, children will and are going to be the best things ever! However, I'm not ready for that kind of responsibility and commitment. I'm not against others having kids young, it's just not what I would want to do, I enjoy my personal free time a lot right now...mostly because I honestly didn't have much of it while I was in school.
I basically think you enjoy life differently. Right now I'm loving the life of freedom, being easy going and carefree...not being restricted by nap times or feeding times.
With kids I will enjoy their sweet chatter or cuddling with them etc etc.

so anyway, that's my thoughts! :)

I love reading all your sweet words, so comment away and I'll do my best to respond to each and every one of you!
